Edit JPG Metadata
When we take a picture with our phones, they often record extra information regarding the photo such as location, device used, and the time of the photo. Sometimes, it is a good idea to remove these information before posting your pictures online as it may contain sensitive information that you don't intend to share. But where do these information stored? In this article, we will learn more about the so called metadata that are embedded in your JPG.
What is a JPG?
JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group. It is one of the most prominent format for digital pictures. Since older operating systems can only supports 3 letter file extension, .jpg is often used instead of .jpeg. Internally, a JPG (or JPEG, both are the same) format is composed of multiple segments. Some of these segments are:
- SOI: Start of Image. The first segments to mark that the file is a JPG
- SOS: Start of Scan. It contains the actual data of the picture inside the file.
- APP0 to APP15: Application specific segment. Various applications can use this segment to store their data
- COM: Comments. Contains comments of the file
- EOI: End of Image. The last segment of a JPG
Where are My Metadata Stored in JPG?
APP1 segment of JPG is typically used to store important metadata. Depending on the application that creates the JPG, the APP1 section may contain data formatted as EXIF or XMP. However, EXIF format is the most common.
What is Inside the EXIF of a JPG Image?
EXIF format itself is composed of several blocks of data called the Image File Directory (IFD). These blocks are:
- IFD0: Contains metadata regarding the image such as image size, orientation, and software used.
- IFD1: Similar to IFD0, but for the thumbnail of the image instead of the actual image
